Rather than managing a mutual absence fund for schools at authority level some Local Authorities choose to outsource the provision of school staff absence insurance to a commercial provider.

Those authorities who opt to put a commercial scheme in place for their schools may make that decision for a number of reasons:

• they prefer an insurer to carry the risk of a ‘catastrophic’ year rather than take the risk of a mutual fund running in to deficit
• they wish to offer schools the flexibility of a commercial insurance scheme (for example more choice of excess periods, daily benefits, options to cover various staff categories)
• they require the guidance of specialist insurance professionals as they many not have sufficient risk management or insurance expertise internally

We aim to offer individual schools comprehensive Accident and Illness Insurance protection at competitive prices.

Scheme Administration

Our Local Authority partners choose what level of involvement they would like in scheme administration. Some of our partner authorities administer the notification of claims and issue scheme renewals directly communicating with schools about all aspects of the provision with our support. However, other partner authorities do not have the administrative capacity internally and therefore outsource all aspects of scheme management directly to Capita BEST.
